Joomla migration FAQ
Questions about Joomla migration and upgrades
The right answer depends on the source release, dependencies and agreed project scope.
What is the difference between Joomla migration and an upgrade?+
An upgrade usually follows a supported path between releases, often within a major version. Migration is commonly used for a move across major versions or environments that needs extension conversion, data handling, custom development or reconstruction. The source and target determine the actual work.
Can you migrate an older Joomla website to a newer version?+
We can assess it and recommend a supported route. Older sites may need intermediate version steps, extension replacement, custom code remediation, data transformation or a partial rebuild. We confirm the path after reviewing the installation.
Can I upgrade directly to Joomla 6?+
It depends on the starting version and site dependencies. Joomla's current 5-to-6 guide assumes a Joomla 5.4.x starting point and says earlier versions should first be updated or migrated to 5.4.x. A site on another version needs its own verified path and compatibility assessment.
How do you check third-party extension compatibility?+
We inventory installed extensions and check vendor compatibility statements, supported releases, update access and licence status. Where appropriate, we install and exercise extensions in a restored staging copy. A pre-update checker is useful as an overview, but Joomla's guidance warns it may not report every extension correctly.
What if a commercial extension requires a new licence?+
We identify the product and update requirement. The client confirms ownership, renews or purchases the appropriate licence, and provides legitimate update access or packages. Licence costs are separate unless a proposal explicitly states otherwise.
What happens if an extension is no longer supported?+
We assess whether it can be removed, replaced by a supported product, adapted within its licence and architecture, or replaced with custom development. That decision affects scope and may require data conversion.
Can custom Joomla components be migrated?+
Often, but custom code and stored data need review. We inspect Joomla API usage, database tables, permissions, frontend and administrator workflows, and then define code changes and data migration tests.
Do third-party integrations need to be tested separately?+
Yes. An otherwise successful Joomla upgrade does not prove that API credentials, payment, booking, CRM, ERP, authentication, scheduled jobs or data synchronization still work. We define and test each critical integration in scope.
Will my website content and user accounts be preserved?+
Content and account preservation is planned against the site's data model and the migration route. We validate representative records, relationships, permissions and user workflows in staging before deployment.
Can you preserve existing URLs and SEO?+
We inventory important URLs, preserve paths where practical, map changed addresses, implement relevant redirects and review metadata, canonical tags, indexability, internal links and sitemaps. Careful work can reduce avoidable SEO risk, but search rankings and traffic cannot be guaranteed unchanged.
How much does Joomla migration cost?+
Cost depends on source and target versions, extensions and licences, custom code, data, templates, integrations, hosting, SEO requirements and acceptance testing. We assess these before offering a reliable scope and quotation.
How long does a Joomla migration take?+
Timing depends on the same technical dependencies as cost, plus access, decisions, licence procurement, testing and the release window. After discovery, we can outline milestones and dependencies for the specific site.
Do you test the migration before changing the live site?+
For projects where a staging environment is appropriate, we restore a copy, exercise the migration and test agreed acceptance criteria before production deployment. The environment and test scope are agreed during discovery.
What happens if the migration encounters a critical problem?+
We agree a deployment and recovery plan, including a verified backup and rollback conditions. If a critical issue appears, the team follows that plan, investigates in the test environment and resumes only when the release criteria are met.
Can you help if a previous Joomla upgrade failed?+
Yes. We can review the current state, error logs, backups and attempted changes to determine whether recovery, repair or a staged migration is appropriate. Available backups and the integrity of the current database affect the options.
