The right route depends on the source release, dependencies and business risk—not a generic update promise.

Migration or upgrade?

The terms describe different kinds of work

The source and target versions, extension ecosystem and environment determine whether a change is a routine update, a supported upgrade or a broader migration.

01 · UPGRADE

Follow a supported version path

A Joomla upgrade generally moves an installation along a supported release path, subject to technical requirements and extension compatibility. Even when Joomla core supports the path, templates, custom code, integrations and business workflows still need review and testing.

Example: a prepared Joomla 5.4.x site may be assessed for an upgrade to Joomla 6.x after environment, extension and backup checks.

02 · MIGRATION

Move across versions or environments

A Joomla migration may involve a structurally different installation, intermediate versions, extension replacement, custom development, data conversion, hosting changes or selective reconstruction. The effort depends on what can be carried forward safely.

Example: an older Joomla site with unavailable extensions and a custom booking workflow may need staged remediation and data mapping before a new target is selected.

Common scenarios

Migration work shaped around the installation

Different source versions and dependencies call for different plans. We assess the actual site before recommending a route.

Post-upgrade repair and troubleshooting

Routine maintenance updates within a supported release line differ from a major-version migration project. We verify the supported path for the precise source release and target; older or unsupported starting versions may need intermediate work.

Before a quotation

A responsible estimate starts with a technical assessment

A URL or target version alone does not reveal extension dependencies, licence access, custom workflows or recovery constraints. We gather enough context to define a dependable scope.

01

Current installation

Joomla release and patch level, PHP and database versions, hosting, site and database size, access availability, and your intended target.

02

Extensions and templates

Components, plugins, modules, templates, overrides, custom extensions, unused packages, known issues and vendor support status.

03

Licences and update access

Commercial product ownership, active licence status, supported target releases, vendor portals and legitimate installation packages.

04

Connected systems

CRM or ERP, payments, bookings, membership, APIs, identity providers, scheduled tasks, external databases and data feeds.

05

Business workflows

Forms, checkout, logins, member content, search, multilingual publishing, dashboards, imports and exports that must keep working.

06

Data, SEO and release

Custom tables, historical URLs, redirects, metadata, backups, restore access, staging availability, recovery plan and launch constraints.

Commercial extensions and licences

The client identifies products they own, confirms active licences and arranges any renewals or new versions required for the target. Where needed, provide legitimate update access, vendor support or installation packages. JoomRocks can help identify requirements within the agreed scope, but does not automatically supply third-party commercial licences. We do not use nulled or unauthorized extension packages. If a product is discontinued, we assess removal, replacement, adaptation or a separate custom solution. Licence availability affects cost, scope and delivery time.

Turn essential workflows into test criteria

The people who use the site should identify what must work after release. Those requirements become acceptance criteria instead of assumptions.

  • Forms and enquiries
  • Payments and checkout
  • User login and registration
  • Member-only content
  • Search and filtering
  • Bookings and reservations
  • Multilingual content
  • Dashboards and data exchange

Extension compatibility needs evidence

We check vendor support and release notes, licence access, code dependencies and behavior in a restored test environment where appropriate. A Joomla pre-update checker is a useful first signal, but it is not conclusive proof that every extension works; the official Joomla 5-to-6 guide notes that extension compatibility reporting depends on information supplied by extension developers.

Assessment to release

A staged migration workflow

Not every project needs every step. The sequence and depth depend on the site, but skipping discovery without understanding the risk is not a responsible default.

  1. STEP 01

    Initial discovery

Collect the source version, target, extension inventory, business goals and access details.

  2. STEP 02

    Technical assessment

Review environment, templates, extensions, custom code, data and integrations.

  3. STEP 03

    Dependency and risk report

Record compatibility findings, licence gaps, unsupported software and open questions.

  4. STEP 04

    Migration strategy

Choose an appropriate supported route, including intermediate stages or selective rebuild where needed.

  5. STEP 05

    Scope and quotation

Define deliverables, exclusions, assumptions, client responsibilities, schedule and cost.

  6. STEP 06

    Staging migration

Restore a copy and run the agreed migration plan in a controlled environment.

  7. STEP 07

    Remediation

Make agreed code, extension, template, data and configuration changes.

  8. STEP 08

    Validation

Test business workflows, permissions, data, integrations, SEO, security and error logs.

  9. STEP 09

    Production release

Deploy during the agreed window with monitoring and a recovery plan.

  10. STEP 010

    Post-migration support

Address issues within the agreed support scope and document follow-up work.

Technical methodology

Validate the whole site, not just the update screen

A version-change notice does not prove that the application is ready. We plan for files, data, code, connected systems and recovery.

A backup is useful only if it can be restored and tested. The plan should cover both a known recovery point and a way to verify the upgraded copy before production.

Backup & restore

Back up all site files and the database; restore the copy and verify the recovery steps.

Staging environment

Use a separate staging or local environment for the trial migration and validation.

Version path & platform

Confirm the supported route and check PHP, database and hosting compatibility.

Extensions & custom code

Review extension and template support, overrides, APIs, custom code and dependency remediation.

Data integrity

Check representative records, relationships, user accounts, permissions and imports or exports.

SEO & URLs

Map useful URLs and redirects; review metadata, canonical tags, internal links, robots directives and sitemap.

Workflows & integrations

Test forms, payments, APIs, authentication, scheduled jobs and business-critical journeys.

Security & administrator

Check administrator access, security-related behavior and relevant configuration after migration.

Performance & errors

Review representative page performance and server or Joomla error logs after changes.

Production & rollback

Agree the deployment window, release steps, monitoring and rollback triggers before launch.

Joomla 5 to Joomla 6

Start by confirming the 5.4.x path and site readiness

Joomla’s official step-by-step guide describes a Joomla 5.4.x starting point for the 5-to-6 upgrade. Earlier Joomla versions should first follow an appropriate path to 5.4.x or receive a different migration strategy.

The guide calls for environment checks, extension review, a backup that has been restored and tested, a staging trial and validation of both the frontend and administrator. It also notes that pre-update extension status is not a complete source of truth. We verify current platform requirements from Joomla’s official documentation at the time of assessment rather than relying on stale figures.

Official Joomla 5 to 6 upgrade guide ↗

What we verify

  • Starting Joomla release and supported route
  • PHP and database versions against current official requirements
  • Extensions, templates and compatibility plugin considerations
  • Vendor release and licence availability
  • Verified backup and restored staging copy
  • Business workflow, frontend and administrator test results

A successful core upgrade does not guarantee every third-party feature works. We agree testing based on the site's actual dependencies.

Legacy installations

Some older sites need more than an in-place upgrade

Legacy Joomla sites can depend on runtime versions, APIs, extensions and hosting environments that are no longer supported.

Older PHP dependencies, obsolete templates, unsupported extensions, custom code using older Joomla APIs, historic database structures and ageing integrations can all affect the route. Some projects need staged remediation, custom migration scripts, selective data transformation or partial rebuilding. We assess what can be carried forward and what is safer to replace; we do not assume every site can move unchanged.

Migration, modernization or rebuild?

01

Migrate

Preserve a viable content model and workflows while moving to a supported target.

02

Modernize

Replace or adapt fragile dependencies and custom code in planned stages.

03

Rebuild selectively

Reconstruct a bounded feature or data area when its current implementation cannot be carried forward safely.

04

Rebuild the site

Consider a broader rebuild when unsupported dependencies or architecture make migration uneconomic or unsuitable.

SEO preservation

Plan URL and indexability changes before launch

Migration work can affect how visitors and search engines reach important pages. We reduce avoidable disruption through an explicit URL and content review.

Search rankings can fluctuate after a migration and cannot be guaranteed unchanged. The goal is to preserve useful signals and avoid preventable broken paths.

01Inventory existing and indexed URLs
02Preserve useful paths where feasible
03Map changed URLs to relevant destinations
04Implement and test appropriate redirects
05Review page content and metadata
06Check canonical tags and robots directives
07Validate sitemap and internal links
08Review applicable structured data
09Test important landing pages
10Monitor Search Console after launch

Scope and planning

What affects migration cost and timeline?

There is no universal fixed price or completion time for a complex Joomla migration. The estimate follows the verified scope and dependencies.

01Source and target Joomla versions
02Extension count, complexity and support status
03Commercial licence and update availability
04Custom components, plugins and PHP code
05Template overrides and frontend behavior
06Third-party applications and API integrations
07Data volume and transformation complexity
08Hosting or server environment changes
09SEO and URL preservation requirements
010Acceptance criteria and test coverage
011Availability of administrator, host and vendor access
012Client decisions and licence procurement time

Client preparation

A useful checklist for your migration enquiry

You do not need every answer for an initial conversation. These details help us assess the route and produce a reliable fixed-scope quotation.

If any information is not available yet, say so. We can identify what needs discovery before confirming a fixed scope.

  • Current Joomla version, including minor release, and target if known
  • Extension and template inventory, including overrides and custom packages
  • Commercial licence status and legitimate update packages
  • Third-party applications, APIs, integrations and scheduled jobs
  • Hosting environment, PHP and database details
  • Custom functionality and business-critical workflows
  • Known issues or previous failed upgrade attempts
  • Administrator, hosting and vendor access availability
  • Backup availability and restore information
  • Preferred maintenance window or deadline

Risk management

Address common migration risks with evidence and testing

Assessment, staging and explicit acceptance criteria help the team find issues while there is still time to choose a response.

Incompatible or abandoned extensions

Check vendor status and test candidate releases; plan replacement or removal for unsupported dependencies.

Missing commercial licence access

Confirm ownership and renewals early so a required package does not block testing or delivery.

Custom code and template overrides

Inspect Joomla API usage and overrides, then exercise the affected page and administrator flows in staging.

PHP, database or hosting mismatch

Compare the actual environment with the target version requirements before selecting a migration path.

Template rendering and frontend regressions

Compare representative pages and responsive layouts in staging after template, override and extension changes.

Forms, workflows and API authentication

Turn critical user journeys into acceptance tests and verify each connected system and credential flow independently.

Data inconsistencies

Check representative records, relationships, permissions and data imports or exports after the migration.

Changed URLs or missing redirects

Inventory useful addresses, map changed paths and test redirects, canonicals and indexability before release.

Insufficient staging coverage

Test the agreed frontend, administrator, security, performance and error-log checks before scheduling production.

Unusable backup or rollback

Restore the backup into a test environment and confirm the recovery steps before production deployment.

Joomla migration FAQ

Questions about Joomla migration and upgrades

The right answer depends on the source release, dependencies and agreed project scope.

What is the difference between Joomla migration and an upgrade?

An upgrade usually follows a supported path between releases, often within a major version. Migration is commonly used for a move across major versions or environments that needs extension conversion, data handling, custom development or reconstruction. The source and target determine the actual work.

Can you migrate an older Joomla website to a newer version?

We can assess it and recommend a supported route. Older sites may need intermediate version steps, extension replacement, custom code remediation, data transformation or a partial rebuild. We confirm the path after reviewing the installation.

Can I upgrade directly to Joomla 6?

It depends on the starting version and site dependencies. Joomla's current 5-to-6 guide assumes a Joomla 5.4.x starting point and says earlier versions should first be updated or migrated to 5.4.x. A site on another version needs its own verified path and compatibility assessment.

How do you check third-party extension compatibility?

We inventory installed extensions and check vendor compatibility statements, supported releases, update access and licence status. Where appropriate, we install and exercise extensions in a restored staging copy. A pre-update checker is useful as an overview, but Joomla's guidance warns it may not report every extension correctly.

What if a commercial extension requires a new licence?

We identify the product and update requirement. The client confirms ownership, renews or purchases the appropriate licence, and provides legitimate update access or packages. Licence costs are separate unless a proposal explicitly states otherwise.

What happens if an extension is no longer supported?

We assess whether it can be removed, replaced by a supported product, adapted within its licence and architecture, or replaced with custom development. That decision affects scope and may require data conversion.

Can custom Joomla components be migrated?

Often, but custom code and stored data need review. We inspect Joomla API usage, database tables, permissions, frontend and administrator workflows, and then define code changes and data migration tests.

Do third-party integrations need to be tested separately?

Yes. An otherwise successful Joomla upgrade does not prove that API credentials, payment, booking, CRM, ERP, authentication, scheduled jobs or data synchronization still work. We define and test each critical integration in scope.

Will my website content and user accounts be preserved?

Content and account preservation is planned against the site's data model and the migration route. We validate representative records, relationships, permissions and user workflows in staging before deployment.

Can you preserve existing URLs and SEO?

We inventory important URLs, preserve paths where practical, map changed addresses, implement relevant redirects and review metadata, canonical tags, indexability, internal links and sitemaps. Careful work can reduce avoidable SEO risk, but search rankings and traffic cannot be guaranteed unchanged.

How much does Joomla migration cost?

Cost depends on source and target versions, extensions and licences, custom code, data, templates, integrations, hosting, SEO requirements and acceptance testing. We assess these before offering a reliable scope and quotation.

How long does a Joomla migration take?

Timing depends on the same technical dependencies as cost, plus access, decisions, licence procurement, testing and the release window. After discovery, we can outline milestones and dependencies for the specific site.

Do you test the migration before changing the live site?

For projects where a staging environment is appropriate, we restore a copy, exercise the migration and test agreed acceptance criteria before production deployment. The environment and test scope are agreed during discovery.

What happens if the migration encounters a critical problem?

We agree a deployment and recovery plan, including a verified backup and rollback conditions. If a critical issue appears, the team follows that plan, investigates in the test environment and resumes only when the release criteria are met.

Can you help if a previous Joomla upgrade failed?

Yes. We can review the current state, error logs, backups and attempted changes to determine whether recovery, repair or a staged migration is appropriate. Available backups and the integrity of the current database affect the options.
